City Man (Single)
I've the feeling I've become a city man
Can't sleep 'til the bars let out at night
And I've grown used to starless midnight walks, the loneliness of business talk
I've become an East Coast city man

I've the feeling I've become a city man
I won't spill my heart without a fight
But that's not how I was raised, this country boy's seen better days
I've become an East Coast city man
Oh, I've become a concrete city man

But I'm begging for some honest conversation
I'm begging but I ain't down on my knees
'Cause here I've learned that men don't weep, with their heads up high and shoulders deep
So I'm begging but I ain't down on my knees
I'm begging, baby come and save me please

I've the feeling I've become a city man
I spend more time alone than in your arms
Though I try to call you twice a day, my voice alone can't feed these flames
And I'm scared to be a lonely city man
I'm scared I'm just a lonely city man

But I'm begging for some honest conversation
I'm but begging but I ain't down on my knees
'Cause here I've learned that men don't weep, with their heads up high and shoulders deep
So I'm begging but I ain't down on my knees
I'm begging, baby come and save me please
I'm begging but I ain't down on my knees

Saturday in June (Single)
I am on a high-rise today
Walking with both eyes closed so I can feel the rain upon my face
Maybe this'll all work out
Maybe this'll all work out
Today, today

Guess I'm just the dreaming type
Got me a picture and I'm tracing round the ovals of your eyes
Hoping you don't pass me by
Hoping you don't pass me by
Bye-bye, bye-bye

Saturday in June
Racing just to meet you
Maybe just this time

Baby, I am on my way
Got me a ticket and I'm watching all the buildings through the rain
Maybe this is all too late
Maybe this is all too late
Too late today

Saturday in June
Racing just to meet you
Maybe just, oh maybe just this

Time is on my side
So I'll be waiting for July

Saturday in June
Racing just to meet you
Saturday in June
Maybe just, oh maybe just this time

Dating With A Checklist (Single)
Are your lips a subtle rouge?
Are your eyes a shade of blue?
Do they sparkle like the embers of an evening fire in June?
Have you Mona Lisa's smile?
Have you Botticelli's style?
Are you subtle in your movement like the flowing Nile?

I'm dating with a checklist
And girl you don't deserve this from me
I'm dating with a checklist
And I don't know your name

Are your cheeks a powdered pink?
Are your lashes scripted ink?
Are they softened like the flowing of a mountain stream in spring?
Are you sweet like Autumn leaves?
Do you glitter in the breeze?
Are you golden like the halo of a late October tree?

I'm dating with a checklist
And girl you don't deserve this from me
I'm dating with a checklist
And I don't know your name

Though I'm meeting you eye to eye
I'm secretly wishing
That maybe it's you not I
Who's doing the dreaming

Do you revel in the details of every little thing?
Do you overlook the covers 'cause you want what lies within?
Are you looking for a puzzle to fit your single piece?
Do you always end up finding the one that fits the least?

I'm dating with a checklist
And girl you don't deserve this from a guy like me
'Cause I'm dating with a checklist
And I don't know your name

1. Wage A Little Peace Play
Wage A Little Peace
There's no reason why we can't be friends
We're just long-lost brothers on a damn big planet
It's okay, we'll find our way
And bring it all together now

I don't claim to have the answers
It's a shame that we can't fathom
All the reasons that
We could be here for
Fighting gets us nowhere
So we should try

To wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change this
Wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change the world

We're so caught up in our differences
How many ways can we subdivide 'til we break
It's all fake
All these superficial lines we make

I don't claim to have the answers
It's a shame that we can't fathom
All the reasons that
We could be here for
Fighting gets us nowhere
So we should try

To wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change this
Wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change the world

It would be easier
If we took what we said and we acted on it
Give me a reason, yeah
To sit and watch the world go by
Who cares if the season's right?
Oh time has never waited for us
We should never have to wait for the time
It's gone by
Yeah the time, it's gone by
To wage a little peace, give a little more
There's no better place than your own front door
Wage a little peace, give a little more
There's no better place than your own front door

To wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change this
Wage a little peace
Give a little more
There's no better place to start
Than at your own front door
And little by little we can change the world

2. The Proposal Play
The Proposal
She took my hand and held it so tightly
I had her heart and it burned so bright, she
whispered and said "I want you to marry me"
"I want you to marry me"

She had the eyes of autumn in colour
Warm was her touch, she loved like no other
We'd bask in the moonlight watching the stars go by
Watching the stars go by

Oh in my dreams
I see things the way I think they ought to be
Oh silly me
Reality kicked in

I can't describe the way that I felt that first time
I saw her my senses were melted
She spoke and my voice was taken away from me
Was taken away from me

Oh in my dreams
I see things the way I think they ought to be
Oh silly me
Reality kicked in

Everybody seems to think that I'm a little crazy
For wanting to go so deep
But there's just one thing that comes between me and this dream
And I overlooked it in my rush to be redeemed
The smallest of steps can be much bigger than it seems to be
A finger to wear this ring

She took my hand and held it so tightly
I had her heart and it burned so bright, she
whispered and said "I want you to marry me"
"I want you to marry ..."

3. November Highway Play
November Highway
I need some room, perhaps a little space to breathe
My heads a mess and add to that my hearts a tease
Oh well, they say at 98 degrees you should be fine, you should be fine

I need some room, perhaps a little space to breathe
My heads a mess and add to that my hearts a tease
Oh well, they say at 98 degrees you should be fine, oh what a waste of expertise

If I could drive along that bright November highway with the windows down
The chill-air bites but I don't mind
If I could drive along that bright November highway I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine
And all in good time

Oh what a view if you just take some time to see
Open your eyes I think you'll find it's what you need
Oh well, they say at sixteen hundred feet you'll feel just fine, I guess thats something they got right

If I could drive along that bright November highway with the windows down
The chill-air bites but I don't mind
If I could drive along that bright November highway I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine
And all in good time

If I could drive along that bright November highway with the windows down
The chill-air bites but I don't mind
If I could drive along that bright November highway with the windows down

4. It's All Easy Play
It's All Easy
I think I finally found the room that I was looking for
With a neon view that's bright when they light up at night - it's red and white
I found a piece that's just my size, at least for now it feels just right
And if I'm ever feeling lonely I know my friends are only ever just a phone away
It seems to say

It's all easy if you try a little harder to make it right
It's all easy

I think I spent too long in finding just what's good for me
In a world so big, so small it's all a mystery - and now I see
I've ended up with time to spare, at least for now the feeling's there
That if I'm ever feeling lonely I know my friends are only ever just a phone away
It seems to say

It's all easy if you try a little harder to make it right
It's all easy

Feel the future coming, here I go
Give the voices nothing for the show
I can feeling a surging in my soul
It's in my soul

I think it's time for me to finally step outside my door
And leave behind me all the wonders of the great indoors
But it's times like this you have to seize to make your dreams reality
And if you're ever feeling lonely you know your friends are only ever just a phone away
And you know that phone is only ever just a room away
It seems to say

It's all easy if you try a little harder to make it right
It's all easy
It's all easy if you try a little harder to make it right
It's all easy

The Ninja's Lament
I am a ninja and I'm in disguise
I'm at a party and it's no surprise
That she hasn't seen me at all

It's hard as a ninja to make any friends
The top of the food chain meets the loneliest end
At least I have sweet skills with two katanas and my poison darts, yeah!
They say that to kill is the best way to a person's heart, yeah!

I'm fallin' behind the love line
Spendin' my best days in diguise
When I should be practicing my pickup lines
Instead I'm hiding in the shadows with my throwing knives

I am a ninja and I'm in disguise
I'm at a party and it's no surprise

On October 22nd, 2008, Robert Gillies and Samuel David Hale spent 10 straight hours in the now defunct Milkhouse Studios in Allston, MA. The tracks that came out of that session were a mix of old, new, funky and slow, and each one came out of that session with a new life and soul.

And it starts with that feeling inside of your heart
That something was wrong from the start
No telling what it is

And you cringe 'cos the things that your life used to hinge on
Fade away and reveal that you've been gone
For far too long, for far too long

And you will find the time
To find out otherwise
And you will find the time
To figure out this life

In these moments that come so few and far between
Its in these moments you'll find your clarity

And you will find the time
To figure out this life
And you will find the time
Connect your heart and mind

Oh, oh, oh together, together, together
Oh, oh, oh together, together, together

Robert's second solo effort co-produced in the winter of 2007 by Duncan Thomas. 'The Day the World Heard' is a collection of songs written over the course of a year working as a volunteer at Maxwell International School with the exception of 'Clayton' which found its way from 'The Shape of Life' in a slightly altered incarnation. Each song has a life of its own but forms part of a whole which truly sums up a year of sacrifice, love and adventure. Robert is now gearing himself up for a full-length album.
